Types of Traumatic Brain Injury

There are several types of traumatic brain injury (tbi). Here are the types commonly associated with auto negligence and traffic accidents:

Immediate TBI •Primary TBI

Bleeding, hematoma, cuts, penetrating wounds, fractures to the skull, shearing and tearing to the brain as it bounces around inside the skull, and even contusions (bruises), can result in permanent damage.

Delayed TBI • Secondary TBI

While the brain may be immediately injured, the onset of changes or symptoms may not be noticed for hours, days, weeks, or months after the immediate injury.

An example of this is a car crash where brain swelling – which causes pressure and the brain to push against the inside of the skull -- results and the consumer is in a coma. The extent of the brain damage may not be know until the consumer emerges from the coma (if ever).

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)

MTBI may result from a consumer victim losing consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. The patient may regain consciousness quickly, yet lag in the ability to demonstrate coordination, recognition of family members or surroundings, memory problems, irritability, fatigue, poor sleeping patterns, or balance problems.

Unfortunately, often these MTBI symptoms fail to improve over time.

In any type of TBI, immediate and dedicated medical and therapeutic interventions are often necessary. The injury victim’s life – and that of his or her family – will be permanently reshaped. The future has changed. Some form of recovery, or improvement in one or more areas of deficit, may occur.

The injury victim may learn to adapt and become independent in many tasks; however, complete independent living – without any supervision or monitoring – may be unlikely.
